At creation’s beginning, God didn’t eliminate the darkness; He responded to it. The Lord resolved the chaos—formlessness, emptiness, and darkness—before introducing life to Earth, protecting living things from harsh conditions.
“The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.” (Genesis 1:2)
"And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light." (Genesis 1:3)
"And God said, “Let there be lights in the expanse of the heavens to separate the day from the night..." (Genesis 1:14)
"The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light, but if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!" (Matthew 6:22-23)
Just as God addressed physical darkness during creation, He calls us to confront the spiritual darkness in our lives. The only way to rightly respond to chaos, emptiness, and confusion in our environments, hearts, and minds is to welcome the light of His truth—and walk in it.
So, I’ve ditched my old friends Vic and Tim for new ones—Vic and Tor. I’ve traded the Victim mentality for the Victor mindset.
Now, when negative thoughts attack, rather than being bullied by lies, I push them aside by fighting back with Scripture, such as the first book of the Bible, Genesis. What better start than Chapter One to counteract the darkness, which is chaos and negativity creeping in, hoping to confuse me?
When this occurs, I meditate on God and His protection, hovering as He did over the deep in verse two. The Holy Spirit moved over the chaotic waters, with darkness stretched above them, soon to zero in on Earth’s main problem: gloom. I picture the darkness of lies as an intruder and God's Word as light, guiding me and keeping me from making a false move.
God acknowledged the physical darkness and brought order to it. Thus, He spoke light into existence on days one and four. On day 1 the Lord said, "Let there be light." Afterward, I'm convinced, God's natural light appeared from high and shines brighter than any luminary in the universe. Later, on day 4, in Genesis 1:14, God said, "Let there be lights..." to create luminaries for Earth's body.
God also provides spiritual light for human bodies. These blessings of light, both natural and supernatural, free us from dark places where emptiness and despair can thrive.
Thankfully, we don't have to live in physical or spiritual darkness because God has blessed the Earth with light from the sun, moon, and stars. We also have light from manufactured lamps. But the most valuable lamps are eye lamps.
"The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light, but if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!" (Matthew 6:22-23)

If you're wondering what eye lamps are, they're our points of view. They operate like windows, letting in spiritual light or darkness based on how we view the world.
When our eye lamps are on and function well, we interpret the world healthily, welcoming light. When they are off or function poorly, we see things in an unhealthy way, inviting inner darkness. Our viewpoints spark right or wrong attitudes and actions, illuminating or darkening us from the inside out.
How, then, can we gain an outlook that reflects the brightest light? By aligning our thoughts and ways with God's Word—the Bible—through Christ. It’s the only path to true perspective and lasting enlightenment. This requires Scripture reading, meditation, and application, all guided by the Holy Spirit for the renewing of our minds.
If our physical surroundings are dark, we can turn to natural or artificial light. But if our spiritual environment is dark, we must turn to true light—God’s Word—and the things from above—to remove spiritual blindness, ignite our spirits, and brighten our world.
Heavenly Father,
You’ve blessed us with spiritual light through the windows of our eyes. Therefore, help us see things Your way, so the light within us is great. Grant us wisdom and discernment to recognize and separate ourselves from darkness. Lord, watch over us always. Protect us, guide us, and illuminate our souls through Your Word.
In Jesus' Name, Amen.
Do you need guidance? Is something clouding your perspective or dimming your light? You can find direction and clarity in God's Word. He's spoken light into the world and desires to shine the same light into you.
